Scope and Content
This is a collection of essays, ephemera, booklets, financial documents, record books, and other papers written or compiled by Minnie Gertrude Lewis (1874 - 1952)a resident of the Hio district of Bridgton, Maine. She was the daughter of Edwin Lyman Lewis (1852-192 ) and Mary E. Rounds (1854-1934). Minnie was educated in Bridgton, and graduated from Bridgton High School in 1892.
She was an active local historian, and some of the collection consists of early documents and family papers, including a local, though unidentified, account book, as well as several monographs on Bridgton history (specifically Guy Monk's1958 History of North Bridgton and Marshall Cram's Address on the dedication of the Bridgton Town house in 1852.) The collection includes a number of essays she wrote, for school, as well as later recollections and stories about the early days of the Hio Ridge neighborhood, which she wrote later in life, in 1940 (box 1, folder 16, "Hio and the Lewises"). There is also correspondence with Margaret Cook on the history of the Hio Ridge neighborhood and its houses (box 1, folder 6), which contributed to the chapter on Hio Ridge in the History of Bridgton published by Bridgton Historical Society in 1968, and updated in 1994 (Bridgton, Maine, 1768-1994, A Bicentennial History).
Approximately half of the collection consists of papers related to the First Congregational Church in Bridgton, of which she was a member. She also served as secretary for the church. In addition to programs from services and various anniversary celebrations, there are financial reports, correspondence, and general histories of the church.
